Tau Po Kau Nature Reserve
Walking like an explorer: slow, silent yet immensely curious. Walking unknown territory at an unusual hour helps us see with new eyes, we want to explain the glimmer of light, admire the unexpected little creature, make out the sound of the night owl, walk in awe, and get to know the world all over again. Discover life in our forests at night.
The best time for Night Walks is from March till November, when wildlife activities is at it’s peak. Different animals activities coincide with different changes throughout the year such as rain, temperature and breeding, therefore no night walks are ever the same.
On a typical Wildlife Night Walk we will encounter more than four species of reptiles as well as a few species of amphibians. Some of the most commonly encountered species includes Chinese Gecko, Garnot’s Gecko, Bowring’s Gecko, Changeable Lizard, Bamboo Pit-viper, Asian Painted Frog, Gunther’s Frog, Green Cascade Frog, and Hong Kong Newt. Depending on the location we may see less encountered species such as Tokay Gecko, Many-banded Krait, Greater Green Snake, White-spotted Slug Snake, Anderson’s Stream Snake, Hong Kong Cascade Frog, Lesser Spiny Frog, Romer’s Tree Frog, and Brown Wood Frog, just to name a few.
If we are very lucky, we may even encounter larger mammals such as East Asian Porcupine, Wild Boar, Red Muntjac, Masked Palm Civet or even the elusive Leopard Cat, although seeing mammals requires a lot more patience and luck than other wildlife due to their secluded nature.
