New Territory Forest Hiking Tour
Pat Sin Leng Country Park, New Territories, Hong Kong
This hike follows a beautiful, mostly forested section in the north of the 78 km long Wilson Trail who runs north-south through the entire Hong Kong territory. After a bit of an uphill start, the path winds through a forest, at times still visibly landscaped with stonewalls and water ways – terraces and drainage of former fields. The remaining walls of former houses make a good backdrop to the lush vegetation and make it easier for the hiker to imagine the rural livelihood of farmers in this area. The path has been laid with stones back in the days when people walked from one village to trade their goods.
Halfway through the hike a pavilion with gorgeous views over fishponds, the sea and islands, invites to a well-earned rest and picnic lunch. Here time seems to have stood still, the villages in the bay below are still inhabited, but the city seems far away. Some villagers are busy at the fishponds. Looking further out north we get a glimpse of the China beyond Hong Kong, its bordering city Sha Tau Kok and the Container Harbor at the Chinese coastline.
The hike continues down into the valley and up another uphill section. Parallel to the path runs a stream, featuring refreshing pools and beautiful waterfalls. Up another hill and finally the path leads on to an unexpected plateau with unique vegetation and continues to the edge of the plateau, again sweeping views, this time over villages and city of the Fanling area, the former farmland of Hong Kong. The path descends down, first through forest, then through the gardens of villagers. The village bus takes us back into civilization.
