Ma On Shan Highland Hiking Tour

Ma On Shan Country Park, New Territories, Hong Kong

The only half-day hike that takes you to overlook the Sai Kung Bay and it’s outlying islands from a plateau 400 meters above sea level. We start our hike from Ma On Shan Village, the site of the once biggest mine in Hong Kong. The mine closed in 1976 after 70 years of Iron mining. Most of the villagers have left the mountain, but some houses are still inhabited. Our hike leads us uphill through forest, on a romantic trail on which we reach the Ngong Ping Plateau after one hour, the mighty Ma On Shan to the left and Pyramid Hill up front. The views from the edge of the plateau over Sai Kung and the many Islands are breathtaking. This is also a favorite starting and landing arena for hang gliders. Standing up here however provides areal views for those of us who aren’t flying too!

After taking it all in, we descend down to Sai Kung using one of the very old village paths, stemming from the time before the road to Sai Kung was built; up to the 1950s villagers would take this path to reach Kowloon on market days carrying goods back and forth over the hill.

Upon arriving at Sai Kung Village we have the option of enjoying its laid-back atmosphere and lunch in one of the many restaurants or returning straight back to Kowloon and Central.

Highlights: Great views, short trip yet far away from the city, laid-back Sai Kung village.
